Churches & Places of Worship
Worship in Stowe began when Lorenzo Dow, a traveling Methodist minister preached in 1802 in a barn. At the time there were approximately 30 families in town. The first Meeting House was built on the site of the current Community Church in 1818. It was shared with various denominations and the town for town meetings. In 1839 the Congregational congregation constructed their own at the head of Maple Street. The Methodist congregation built theirs at the site of Mac’s Market in 1840. Also in 1840, the West Branch meeting house was built at the intersection of Mountain and Luce Hill Roads and served the Free Will Baptists and other groups. By 1860 the remaining occupants of the village “Meeting House” were Universalists and the Unitarians. The Universalists purchased the land on which the First Meeting House was located. The town moved the meeting house to its present location, [home the VT SKI & SNOWBOARD MUSEUM],and the current building was build further back from the road.
