The Stafford family legacy in Stowe stretches back more than a century. In 1928, Clifton Stafford — Bob’s grandfather — opened the funeral home. Clifton and his wife, Marguerite, added a jewelry and gift shop in 1946 when he combined two buildings (a former drugstore and a residence) and the current site was born, housing both Stafford’s Country Store and the Stafford Funeral Home.

Clifton’s only son, Roderick, added a pharmacy to the business in 1959 and also followed his father into the family funeral practice. Roderick married Marilyn and they raised a family of six children, all of whom worked in the gift shop as teenagers
